Description | Session 1: Informal Assessments in the School Setting As school-based SLPs we’ve all faced numerous challenges in completing timely and informative speech-language evaluations. Often, the single greatest challenge is the time required to do so amidst increasing caseloads and demands on our time. In this webinar, we will explore many timesaving informal assessment resources, most of which are free! Informal assessment measures are sanctioned by both ASHA and IDEA law. You will discover quick assessment activities that target speech production, comprehension, verbal expression, emerging language, fluency, and social communication/social pragmatics. A primary goal of this type of assessment is to increase student engagement, while gathering more relevant information for eligibility determination and IEP development.. You’ll receive a digital resource handout, complete with active web links containing numerous informal measures for grades PreK-12 that are geared to students displaying a variety of communication challenges. Session 2: Apraxia: Assessment and Treatment Protocols and Resources This webinar will focus solely on the motor speech disorder of Apraxia, beginning with the need to assess whether or not a very young child is functionally non-verbal due to a motor speech component. The assessment section of the webinar will include comprehensive resources for both formal and informal measures and begin with the assessment of oral movements, vocalizations and progress towards actual speech sound production and beyond. The speaker’s specific assessment protocol will be presented and discussed. A comprehensive developmental treatment protocol will then be explored. Participants will receive numerous therapy activities that directly align with the results of their evaluations. In other words, once the level of oral motor development has been determined, you will then have a “menu” of activities to choose from to facilitate your therapy goals. A detailed digital handout will be provided for future reference. Session 3: The Role of the SLP in Central Auditory Processing Disorders Defining Central Auditory Processing Disorders is often a challenge for the Speech Language Pathologist as it is recognized to be in the domain of our Audiologist colleagues. It is, however, relevant to the SLP as it pertains to language processing skills, working memory, processing time and auditory comprehension. We therefore will explore “what these students look like and sound like” in terms of functional and educational impacts. A comparison/contrast approach will be used to clearly delineate the assessment roles of the Audiologist and SLP. Evidence- based interventions and commercially available products will be identified. Acknowledging that this is a neurologically based disorder will assist the SLP in defining their roles beyond assessment and will include the following options: recommending IEP accommodations/modifications, direct instruction in the use of compensatory listening strategies, consultations and helpful tips for educators. Participants can choose to participate in individual sessions or sign up for the entire series. |
