Kristin Robertson is currently an Assistant Principal at Mill Pond School in Westborough. In her role as an assistant principal, she works collaboratively with students, parents, and teachers to solve problems and help teach students the necessary skills to allow them to be successful in school. Kristin has also been an SEI instructor for the past 10 years, supporting educators in developing effective strategies for teaching English language learners. Before this role, she worked as the Social Studies Coordinator for the Westborough Public Schools. Kristin also spent the majority of her career in education as a classroom teacher.

Description

This course provides educators with research-based, practical strategies for supporting English Language Learners across all content areas and proficiency levels. Participants will explore key instructional approaches including strategies for building academic language, developing communication skills, supporting literacy development, and creating culturally responsive learning environments. Through reading, reflection, and application activities, teachers will develop actionable plans to implement these strategies with their own ELL students, resulting in increased engagement, language development, and academic achievement.


This course will provide teachers with practical, research-based strategies to effectively support English Language Learners. Participants will:

  • Understand the key principles of effective ELL instruction across proficiency levels
  • Know and be able to apply specific strategies for developing students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills
  • Describe scaffolding techniques that provide access to grade-level content while supporting language development
  • Create culturally responsive learning environments that honor students’ backgrounds and build on their assets
  • Develop practical action plans to implement toolkit strategies in their own teaching contexts
